Biochemistry is in the top 10 fastest growing occupations in STEM and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the need for biochemists will increase by 31% by 2020.

Your academic expertise in Biochemistry will be widely applicable to a variety and fields in science, including medicine, engineering, and the food industry. In any of these settings you could be hired as a Biochemist on an interdisciplinary team of scientists. An advanced degree (a Master’s or PhD) will allow you to take on significantly more leadership on these teams. Biochemistry is also an excellent foundation for professional schools in Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Podiatry, Veterinary Medicine, and Law. Ursuline’s program includes all pre-requisites for graduate programs in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical science, molecular biology, and medical school.

If you choose to enter the workforce directly following your undergraduate program, you’ll be qualified for entry-level positions in the chemical, polymer, environmental, forensic, and pharmaceutical industries and government labs, just to name a few.

As a Biochemistry major at Ursuline, you could conduct research or co-op with:

  • The National Science Foundation
  • The University of Toledo
  • Miami University
  • Kent State University
  • Case Western Reserve University
  • University of Kentucky
  • Sherwin-Williams Research and Development
  • NASA Glenn Lewis’ Educational and Research Collaborative Internship

You’ll take the following classes, in addition to your Ursuline Core Curriculum, to fulfil the requirements for a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry:

  • Chemistry 105/Lab – Principles of Chemistry I
  • Chemistry 106/Lab – Principles of Chemistry II
  • Chemistry 221/Lab – Organic Chemistry I
  • Chemistry 222/Lab – Organic Chemistry II
  • Chemistry 422/Lab – Biochemistry I
  • Chemistry 423/Lab – Biochemistry II
  • Physics 203/Lab – College Physics I with Calculus
  • Physics 204/Lab – College Physics II with Calculus
  • Mathematics 221 – Calculus I
  • Mathematics 222 – Calculus II
  • Mathematics 223 – Calculus III
  • Biology 200/Lab – Introductory Biology – Biodiversity, Form, Function, and Ecology
  • Biology 205/Lab – Introductory Biology – Cells, Genetics, Energy Transfer, and Evolution
  • Chemistry 320 – Survey of Physical Chemistry (Taken at Cleveland State University)
  • Chemistry 310/315 – Survey of Analytical Chemistry/Lab (Taken at Cleveland State University)
  • Chemistry 487, Undergraduate Research or Internship
  • Three upper level courses, one of which must be a Chemistry course, and the other two selected among Biology 430/Lab – Cell Biology, Biology 335/Lab – Genetics, or Biology 380/Lab – Advanced Physiology and Immunology
